Why go to Praia do Futuro?
Praia do Futuro is not the prettiest beach near Fortaleza. It is the most alive. The barracas that line this stretch of coast are a genuine institution, not a tourist creation. You eat at long plastic tables, surrounded by families and groups of friends who come here every week. The seafood is fresh, the beer is cold and no one is performing for visitors.
The beach itself is wide and often windy, which keeps the water in motion. On calmer days, swimming is fine. On rougher days, the barracas are the point, not the water. On Thursday evenings, the entire stretch transforms into what locals call Quinta do Futuro: a city-wide beach social that runs well into the night.
Praia do Futuro, in a few local facts
- 8 kmLong urban coastlineOne of the longest urban beaches in Fortaleza, running from Futuro to the Dunas area.
- QuintaThursday traditionThursday has a name here. Quinta do Caranguejo grew from a local crab tradition associated with Chico do Caranguejo, dating back to the 1980s, and became one of Praia do Futuro's signature weekly gatherings.
- CaranguejoCrab is the centrepiece of the Thursday tradition. Whole crabs, shared at long tables with beer.
- BarracasMore than beach kiosks. Some barracas at Praia do Futuro have been operating for decades and have their own loyal regulars.
- WindThe northeast trade winds blow consistently here. Good for kite flyers and kitesurfers. Less ideal for calm swimming after midday.

- Payment. Most barracas accept cards, but cash is also widely used. Prices at the barracas are generally reasonable.
