Praia de Iracema, Meireles and Mucuripe sit side by side along the Avenida Beira Mar, the seafront promenade in the middle of the city. This is where the hotels are, and where people walk, cycle and watch the sun go down.
Further east the mood changes. Praia do Futuro is the open-sea beach with the big beach restaurants (barracas). At the eastern edge of the city, Sabiaguaba is protected nature with dunes and mangroves. Porto das Dunas and Morro Branco are outside Fortaleza and make good day trips.
Tip: swimming is best at Praia do Futuro, in the morning, and always where the flags say it is safe.
