Barracas

Barracas are the open-air beach restaurants that define the Fortaleza beach experience. They are not beach kiosks. The best ones serve full meals of fresh seafood at long communal tables, surrounded by locals who come back every week.

What is a barraca?

A barraca (plural: barracas) is a beach establishment, typically open-air, serving food and drinks directly on the sand. In Fortaleza, the barracas at Praia do Futuro have evolved into full restaurants with proper kitchens, waitstaff and loyal regular customers. Some have been operating for decades.

The Thursday tradition at Praia do Futuro, known as Quinta do Caranguejo, draws large crowds to the barracas for crab, beer and live music.
