Fortaleza's music
Forró: dance until sunrise
Forró is the traditional dance music of northeast Brazil and Fortaleza is one of its true homes. Thursday is the fixed forró night across the city, and the São João festival in June is the season's high point.
What is forró?
A family of northeast Brazilian musical styles and partner dances. The traditional form uses accordion, zabumba drum and triangle. Modern forró (universitário) is faster and danced at larger venues.
When to find it
Thursday nights, the "Quinta do Forró" tradition, mean dedicated events at many venues. Weekend nights also feature live forró. June (São João) is the best month for live music in the city.
