What is Mucuripe like?
Mucuripe was a fishing village long before it became part of the city. According to historian Raimundo Girão, Spanish navigator Vicente Pinzón may have landed here months before Cabral reached Brazil. In 1953 the Port of Mucuripe opened, replacing the old port at Praia de Iracema.
The jangadeiros, fishermen with wooden sailing rafts, are still part of the neighbourhood, even if fishing has shrunk. Murals honour their struggle. Between the new towers you will find the Mercado dos Peixes, where you buy fresh fish and have it fried on the spot.
✅ Good for
- Fresh fish and seafood
- Local life and history
- The quieter end of the promenade
⚠️ Less good for
- A swimming beach: it is more harbour than beach
- Nightlife
- A wide choice of hotels
