About Estação das Artes

From platform to gallery

João Felipe station opened on 9 June 1880 and took its present name in 1946 (Diário do Nordeste). Since 30 March 2022 the site has been Estação das Artes. The Pinacoteca puts the complex at 67,000 m², taking in the Pinacoteca do Ceará, the railway museum, the Kuya design centre and the Mercado AlimentaCE food hall.

The Pinacoteca do Ceará opened in December 2022 inside seven old warehouses of the RFFSA, the former federal railway company. It holds the state of Ceará’s art collection and stages large changing exhibitions.

✅ Good for

  • Art lovers: a big museum, free
  • Railway fans: a museum in the old station
  • Saturdays: open until 20:00

⚠️ Less good for

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: closed
  • A quick stop: the complex is large
Tip: On Saturday the Pinacoteca only opens at 12:00 but stays open until 20:00. The theatre is 11 minutes away on foot, so a morning tour there and an afternoon here fit well together.
