About Museu do Ceará

Ceará’s oldest museum, on pause

The Museu do Ceará was founded in 1933 as the Museu Histórico do Ceará and is the oldest museum run by the state. Since 1990 it has occupied the Palacete Senador Alencar, built between 1855 and 1871, which earlier housed the public library, the state legislature and the university law school (Diário do Nordeste).

It closed in April 2019 for emergency maintenance. Ceará’s public prosecutor’s office reports that the restoration is finished and the building was handed to the state culture department in July 2026. A curator, fittings and staff are still needed, and the reopening is expected in December 2026. That date has slipped several times before.

✅ Good for

  • The façade: already visible from Praça dos Leões
  • Visitors in December 2026 or later
  • History lovers

⚠️ Less good for

  • A visit now: the museum is closed
  • Planning around a fixed date: the reopening has been postponed before
Tip: Walk through Praça dos Leões between the cathedral (6 minutes) and the theatre (10 minutes): the restored façade is already on view.
