About Cineteatro São Luiz

The last grand street cinema

Cineteatro São Luiz opened on 26 March 1958 on Praça do Ferreira, Fortaleza’s central square. The Instituto Dragão do Mar, which runs it, calls it the oldest street cinema still working in the city. It reopened in 2014 after a full restoration.

The style is art deco. The lobby is lined with Carrara marble from Italy, with three crystal chandeliers from former Czechoslovakia, one of them hanging since opening night. The hall seats 1,050 (Diário do Nordeste, 2024). Films, theatre, music and dance are on, and the official page says the programme is "mostly free or at popular prices".

✅ Good for

  • A night at the cinema or theatre in a historic hall
  • Art deco and architecture fans
  • Pairing with Praça do Ferreira right outside

⚠️ Less good for

  • Mondays and Sundays: box office closed (Sunday shows happen sometimes)
  • Popping in by day without a tour: the doors are often shut
Tip: Check what is on at Sympla, where tickets are sold. For a free show, plan to queue early.
