What is Centro like?
Centro is Fortaleza’s historic heart. The Theatro José de Alencar, opened in 1910, is an Art Nouveau building of cast iron with gardens by landscape architect Burle Marx. The cathedral took forty years to finish and was inspired by Notre-Dame in Paris.
For souvenirs, go to the Mercado Central, with hundreds of small shops over several floors. The Passeio Público is the city’s oldest square, shaded by a baobab planted in 1910.
✅ Good for
- History and architecture
- Souvenirs and crafts
- A day of culture, much of it free
⚠️ Less good for
