About Igreja do Rosário

The city’s oldest church

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is Fortaleza’s oldest church. It was built by enslaved and free Black people of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary, at a time when many were not welcome in other churches. O POVO gives around 1730 (2026) and 1753 (2023) for its construction. It was first made of rammed earth and later rebuilt in masonry.

The church stands on Praça General Tibúrcio, better known as Praça dos Leões. It is closed. Restoration began in December 2025, but in May 2026 work had stopped while the city building permit was still pending (O POVO, 26-05-2026).

✅ Good for

  • History lovers: you can see the front from the square
  • Pairing with Praça dos Leões and the Museu do Ceará

⚠️ Less good for

  • Visiting inside: the church is closed
  • Attending Mass: there is none at present
Tip: See the front from Praça dos Leões. The Museu do Ceará, the Centro Cultural Banco do Nordeste and the cathedral are a few minutes away.

Good to know

Do not come to go inside. The church is protected by both state and city; its choir loft was already closed in 2023 because the floor was unsafe (O POVO).

Graves under the floor

Work in 2021 found more than fifty bodies beneath the floor. Churches served as burial grounds before cemeteries existed (O POVO, 2023).

Waiting for a permit

The archdiocese is paying for the restoration. In May 2026 the request was still waiting for a city permit (O POVO).
