About Igreja do Pequeno Grande

A Scottish engineer and Belgian iron

Igreja do Pequeno Grande belongs to the Colégio da Imaculada Conceição, a school that began in 1866 as a girls’ college run by the Sisters of St Vincent de Paul. The foundation stone was laid in 1896, work stopped for a year, and the church was consecrated on Saturday 21 November 1903 (Patrimônio Belga no Brasil).

Its metal frame came from Belgium, and the same source calls it probably the first work of iron architecture in Ceará. The design is credited to Isaac Correia de Amaral from Guaramiranga, trained in Germany, working with Robert Gow Blasby, a Scottish engineer based in Ceará. The name comes from a miraculous image of the Child Jesus from Bohemia: small (pequeno) and great (grande).

✅ Good for

  • Architecture fans: pinnacles and iron
  • A short stop between the fort and the cathedral
  • Photos of the façade

⚠️ Less good for

  • Counting on getting inside: no times are published
  • Looking for a big museum
Tip: Look at the long side wall from Avenida Santos Dumont: that is where the row of pinnacles and round windows shows best.
