About Casa de José de Alencar

Where the author of Iracema was born

José de Alencar was born in 1829 on the Alagadiço Novo estate, now in Messejana in the south of Fortaleza. He is regarded as Brazil’s greatest novelist; Iracema is his best-known book, and the grand theatre in the centre carries his name. Seven hectares of the estate survive, run as a cultural centre by the Federal University of Ceará.

In 1964 the cottage and the land around it were listed as national heritage. By then the main house had been demolished; only the cottage and the ruins of Ceará’s first steam-powered sugar mill remained. The university added a colonial-style building by architect Liberal de Castro, which houses the Museu Arthur Ramos, the Luiza Ramos bobbin-lace collection, the Pinacoteca Floriano Teixeira and the Salão Iracema.
