About Igreja do Carmo

A chapel that grew into a church

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo began as a chapel to Our Lady of Livramento, started by a brotherhood in 1850. A new design followed in 1870; the drought of 1877–1879, storms and even ant nests slowed the work. In 1892 it took its present name, and it was consecrated on 25 March 1906 (O POVO, Ancoradouro blog, 2013).

Inside is an oil painting from 1904 by Raimundo Ramos, known as Cotoco: 2.46 by 6.57 metres, showing Our Lady of Mount Carmel freeing souls from purgatory. Every 13 May at 18:00 the great procession to the Fátima sanctuary sets off from here (Diário do Nordeste, 2023).

✅ Good for

  • A quiet church with a fine painting
  • Seeing the 13 May procession
  • Pairing with the Fátima sanctuary or São Benedito

⚠️ Less good for

  • Mondays: no Mass
  • Looking for a tour: none is published
Tip: Arrive just before or after a Mass, so the church is open and you disturb no one: around 7:30 or 17:00 on weekdays.

🎨

Cotoco’s canvas

Raimundo Ramos (Cotoco) painted the large canvas in 1904: Our Lady of Mount Carmel freeing souls from purgatory.

📦

Auctioned at customs

The statue of the patroness came from Portugal but nobody collected it at customs. It was auctioned; the buyer, José Rosas, later gave it to the church.
