About Igreja de São Benedito

A downtown church you can always walk into

Igreja de São Benedito is the Santuário Arquidiocesano de Adoração, the archdiocese’s church for Eucharistic adoration. Its own website says it is open every day from 7:30 to 18:00, not only for Mass. That makes it one of the few downtown churches where you can be sure to get in during the day.

The story goes back to 1935, when Monsignor Luiz Rocha asked for priests to run perpetual adoration. The Dutch province of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament answered: on 15 January 1938 Father João van Heumen arrived from the Netherlands. Building of the new church began in 1955, and São Benedito became a parish on 14 July 1968 (official website).

✅ Good for

  • A quiet moment in the middle of the city
  • Open daily, Mondays and Sundays included
  • Anyone tired of finding church doors locked

⚠️ Less good for

  • Expecting a monument or a tour: it is a place of prayer
  • After 18:00: open only for Mass
Tip: Visit on a quiet morning or afternoon, between 7:30 and 18:00. Keep your voice down: people pray here all day.
